I've been pretty happy with my system since the upgrade. The only program I use regularly that just won't work is the Cisco VPN client I have to use when I'm working from home - and given the recent snow in the Thames Valley that's been quite a lot - but that works fine inside a virtual machine (XP in VirtualBox) - and running it like that even has its own advantages in allowing the host OS to work as normal and still connect to my home network.

My laptop contains a P7350 chip (according to the email invoice I just found), which isn't capable of hardware virtualization, so I can't use XP Mode on my laptop - hence the use of VirtualBox.

As to any advantages of 64-bit over 32-bit.... I'm not sure. My laptop is definitely more lively now, but that may just have been the change from Vista to Win7. The lack of certain drivers is certainly a pain, but one I hope will diminish with time and updates from the manufacturers. The scroll bar being something I don't expect to see an update for, mind you! It may be that one of the other sets of drivers re-enables it, I just haven't gone looking as I don't miss it anyway and I'm a great believer in leaving things alone once they're working well enough!

One driver that probably does need an update, though, is the Intel WIFI chipset. We use Windows Home Server (where this blog is hosted, amongst other things!) to backup our laptops, and the Samsung has stopped responding to Wake-On-LAN requests and I can't find any way of getting it working again. This is probably the biggest annoyance as I now have to let it backup when it's turned on (i.e. when I'm using it) rather than in the middle of the night. Reminds me that I ought to check the Intel site for an update...

At work, however, there's definitely a big improvement in doing builds of our system in Visual Studio. It's gone from being a time-to-make-a-cup-of-tea operation to taking a hair less than a minute.

Happy to help where I can!

Bryan.

Hi Bryan, I found this page by Googling for solutions to the problem of installing 64-bit Win 7 on the Samsung R560. Just want to say thanks for the information - I'd found posts elsewhere online but they assumed a knowledge of "modded infs" and therefore went straight over my head. Glad to see you have made it work; can I ask how the system has held up in the subsequent weeks? Also which processor is in your R560? Samsung has an annoying habit of selling the same model with various different components. Finally, in general do you think there is any significant benefit to choosing 64-bit Win 7 over 32-bit Win 7 on the laptop? I do occasionally use Photoshop, but can't see 4Gb RAM providing that much advantage over 3-and-a-bit Gb.

Sorry for all the questions. I was fed up of Vista and bought Win 7, planning to install the 64-bit version after various sites seemed to take the view that only Spectrums and Acorn computers would have trouble with 64-bit (I exaggerate but you get the idea). However it seems we are in the same place as 5 years ago; opting for 64-bit is a gamble. My Win 7 box is now sitting on the shelf and I wonder if I should simply install 32-bit (apart from the hassle you describe, I do actually use the scroll bar). Anyway that's enough rambling, I'd appreciate any thoughts or advice you may have. Many thanks, Simon.

Sorry it's taken a couple of days to get to this; things are a bit silly at the moment...

Anyway, I believe the order I did things was:
1) BIOS update WIN_R560_09LA from the Samsung website - had to be done from a 32-bit OS
2) Install Win7 64-bit
3) Graphics drivers from the nVidia website 186.81_notebook_win7_winvista_64bit_international_whql
 * I let it update the audio drivers as well

The following drivers from the R610 product page on the Samsung website:
4) Chipset drivers: 20080922155456875_Chipset_8.7.0.1007
5) Keyboard: 20080729204648343_MagicKBD_7.0.2.0
6) Easy_Display_Manager_64bit_2.2.10.0
7) Easy_Battery_Manager3_3.2.1.9
8 ) Easy_SpeedUp_Manager_2.0.2.3

I don't know if the latter 3 are necessary, but if I remember correctly one of them enabled the Fn key combinations- volume up/down and so on.

Hope this helps!

I hope can help me on installing Windows 7 on a Samsung R560. My two boys have installed it and now find that Windows states that the Nvidia Geforce 9600 GS is a standard VGA. Could you please state the exact sequence of 610 drivers and updates you installed. We have updated the R560 bios. Do you have to update with the R610 Bios? Hoping you can help.
